Rising from the Ashes!
On January 7, our community faced a devastating natural disaster. The Eaton Fire caused severe damage to Mater Dolorosa, destroying several buildings, including employee apartments, a hermitage, and maintenance and laundry facilities. The fire also damaged the Garden of Seven Sorrows and burned part of DeLoor Hall and nearby offices.
Despite this loss, we are incredibly grateful that the main retreat center, the Stations of the Cross, Gethsemane Garden, and our beloved Morton Bay Fig tree remained unharmed. Thanks to the quick action of first responders, the hard work of our facilities staff, and the generosity of volunteers and donors, cleanup began immediately. Just one month later, on February 7, we were able to partially reopen!
Now, we are excited to announce that we are fully reopening and invite you to a special Homecoming event on Ash Wednesday, March 5!

At this event, guests will have the opportunity to:
- Receive ashes as a sign of faith and renewal
- Pray the Stations of the Cross
- Take a guided tour of the areas affected by the fire and those that were spared

A Time for Reflection and Renewal
The Passionists—a community of priests, brothers, and laypeople—are called to serve those who suffer. We share Christ’s love through prayer, ministry, and service to those in need. Our mission is to keep alive the memory of Christ’s Passion and to offer hope through the power of the Cross and the Resurrection.
This Ash Wednesday, we will pray for those still suffering from the effects of the fires. As we reflect on Jesus’s suffering, we open our hearts to those who are hurting today. By coming together in prayer, we renew our strength and commitment to bringing comfort, healing, and hope to our world.
We look forward to welcoming you on March 5 and sharing this special day of prayer and renewal with you.
